For Rodolfo (Humberto de Vargas), life at home feels empty and cold, as if he doesn’t belong there. Meanwhile, his first wife Graciela (Sara Bessio) and their teenage daughter, Ana (Anaclara Ferreyra Palfy), are going through defining moments in their lives. Subtly, Rodolfo will try to slip back into the place he once had next to them and walked away from ten years ago. 3 is a comedy about three people condemned to the same, absurd fate: being a family.

Main Characters

Humberto de Vargas Rodolfo

(Montevideo, Uruguay, 1962). Actor, radio and TV host, singer and football narrator, Humberto de Vargas began his artistic career at an early age. In 1977 he won a televised singing contest and almost immediately after became a household name as a regular presence on Canal 10, where he hosted the variety show La revista estelar for more than a decade. His first venture into theater came in 1983, when he joined the cast of a local production of Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman. That performance earned De Vargas a Florencio, Uruguay’s most prestigious award for theater productions. A second Florencio came in 2001 for his role as Werner Heisenberg in Michael Frayn’s Copenhague. As a film actor he played Jorge in Álvaro Buela’s Alma Mater (2005). He has recently been part of the TV series Porque te quiero así and the play Al encuentro de las tres Marías. Currently he hosts the morning show Arriba gente on Canal 10.

Sara Bessio Graciela

(Montevideo, Uruguay, 1968). Trained as an actor at the Escuela Municipal de Arte Dramático Margarita Xirgu (EMAD), she earned upon graduation a yearlong working scholarship with the Comedia Nacional, Uruguay’s national theater company. Meanwhile, she was a member of La Comuna, an independent company and was directed by prominent names of the uruguayan theater scene in productions such as Doña Ramona, The Cherry Orchard, The Trojan Women, Opiniones de un payaso, Le Loup Garou, King Lear, Ghosts and Esquina peligrosa, among others. She was also part of the theater group Pampinoplas and directed the play Estoy buscando un Saltanubes. In 1994 she starred in La Trampa, a film by Ricardo Islas and Julio Porley. Bessio also appeared in the TV series Curro Jiménez: El regreso de una leyenda and the film El Faro, by Eduardo Mignogna. Since 1992 she has been a body expression and drama teacher.

Anaclara Ferreyra Palfy Ana

(Montevideo, Uruguay, 1990). In 2005 she began her acting studies at the Escuela del Actor. That same year she played the leading role in a short film directed by Juan Pablo Rebella and Pablo Stoll. Since then she has appeared in several shorts while she keeps training as an actor. 3 is her feature-film debut in a leading role.

Pablo Stoll Ward Director/Screenwriter

Born in 1974 in Montevideo, Uruguay. Together with Juan Pablo Rebella he scripted and directed 25 Watts (2001) and Whisky (2004). Both films received several international awards and were commercially released worldwide. During 2006 and 2007, Stoll was scriptwriter, director and occasional actor in the news satire show Los Informantes, aired for two seasons on Montevideo’s Channel 4. He has also directed several video clips and short documentaries for television. He is a founding partner at Control Z Films, the production company for his own films and where he has produced also La Perrera (2006), Acné (2008) and Gigante (2009). In 2009 he directed Hiroshima, his first solo feature film, which was chosen for Toronto, Rotterdam, Jeonju, Mar del Plata and Jerusalem among other international film festivals.

3 at Cannes

Pablo Stoll’s 3, a Control Z Films production, will have its international première at the Cannes Film Festival in the prestigious Directors’ Fortnight.

The 2012 Selection was announced today by the French Directors Guild, which organizes this section since 1969. Among the various sections at the Cannes Film Festival, the Directors’ Fortnight is distinguished by its “independent-mindedness and its non-competitive nature”. Currently, French film critic Edouard Waintrop serves as Artistic Director of the Directors’ Fortnight.
